Klaus Maria Brandauer

Austrian actor/director — a taste of Hollywood

Best place to while away the day

In the summer, you should definitely go to one of the wine taverns in Grinzing or venture a little higher up the mountain. There’s nothing better than sitting outside in a gentle breeze and admiring the city from a distance, knowing that you could be back there in half an hour but you don’t have to be. And wine tastes good anywhere in the winter!

The silver screen

Burg-Kino in Ringstraße has been showing Carol Reed’s The Third Man based on a script by Graham Greene for years. It’s an absolute masterpiece – the ultimate Viennese film! Lots of films are referred to as classics, but this really is one. Alongside the unforgettable Orson Welles, the film features the actor Ernst Deutsch, who was just as important but is sadly often forgotten. I did a big European tour of Lessing’s Nathan the Wise with him in the early years of my career. It cheers me up every time I drive past the cinema and see them advertising The Third Man because I know that one of my personal heroes will be on the screen that day. Extra tip from the hotel:
