Drinks and nibbles
For an aperitif I head off to the Züri-Bar in Niederdorf — rediscovered, following an insider tip, by the people of urban Zurich. A Prosecco or a brown ale at the trendy, venerable old round bar with a taste for Rock ’n’ Roll, and then it’s off through the connecting doors straight into the Kon-Tiki bar next door. Here a DJ mostly plays his vinyl records, or there’s a live band playing in a corner of the labyrinthine watering hole.In stark contrast to that is a visit to the Kronenhalle Bar — the most beautiful bar in Zurich! Here I enjoy a dry Martini or two in the company of original works by Chagall and Picasso!

Art and culture
Contemporary dance and art blend together in the Tanzhaus Zürich (Zurich’s House of Dance). Here you’ll find the experimental, the lively, the unsettling and the latest trends in performing arts. But you don’t have to go far to see art — you don’t even need to go out. The Atelier on the ground floor offersa working space for international and local artists. The invited artists live and work in the hotel. After their stay, an original work remains, with the art collection of the hotel continuously expanding.

A walk around the city
The rivers Sihl and Limmat flow into each other at the tip of the Platzspitzpark behind the National Museum, from where they just become the Limmat. The river landscape with its view from the headland was a favourite location of James Joyce, who described it in his novel, ‘Finnegans Wake’. From here I walk through the park to the Restaurant Spitz. There’s regional cuisine here with fresh local ideas and products in tasteful surroundings, after which I indulge in a drinkin the bar with neon art by Kerim Seiler.

On Saturdays the flea market at the Kanzlei-Areal has everything imaginable and unimaginable. This is where the whole neighbourhood gets together and later goes off for a game of boules. Not far away are the Kasernenareal (barracks) and the Summergarte (summer garden). Best grilled fish in town.
