During the day

My perfect start to the day begins at the Isemarkt – market stalls selling fresh fruit, cheese, flowers and small specialities line up under the underground arches. Highly recommended: the pastrami sandwich from the Dreymann butcher’s shop – legendary! Afterwards, I stroll through Planten un Blomen and treat myself to a break at the Park Café – with a view of the greenery, the coffee tastes twice as good. Finally, I head up to the Elbphilharmonie Plaza: from up there, you have a panoramic view of the harbour, the Speicherstadt and the whole city – a real Hamburg highlight!

Afternoon

In the afternoon, I like to head to the Schanzen and Karoviertel districts. Here, you can stroll through small boutiques and second-hand shops and soak up the creative atmosphere. A must-do: stop at elbgold – you can smell the in-house roastery from afar, and the coffee is a delight. If you fancy a special view, you can climb the Feldstraße bunker – from the top, the whole of Hamburg lies at your feet. Afterwards, I treat myself to a late lunch at Oren Ishii – fresh Asian cuisine, uncomplicated and really delicious. Fun fact: Oren Ishii is also the concept creator for the restaurant at the 25hours Hotel in Copenhagen – so if you’re in the mood for a modern food concept, this is the place to be. Afterwards, I head to the Westfield Centre for a little shopping spree. And if you have children with you, it’s definitely worth making a detour to the nearby Hafencity playground – here, the little ones can romp around while the grown-ups take a breather.

In the evening & into the night

I like to start the evening with an aperitif at Little Amsterdam – a relaxed atmosphere and perfect drinks to get the evening going. Then it’s on to Arc on Eppendorfer Weg. ‘Arc’ is the French word for arch – and that’s exactly what the restaurant does, bridging the gap between classic haute cuisine and a young, sustainable and affordable concept. Here you can enjoy regionally inspired fine dining that celebrates Hamburg’s producers. The menu showcases the diversity of the region, and all products are marked on the menu – so you can read about who is behind the ingredients, their history and their production methods in the so-called ‘friends book’. A culinary experience that not only tastes good, but also connects people.
