My Favourites at the Altes Hafenamt
The magazine mare has published photo reports on maritime topics since its inception. Topics are not restricted to life above and below the waves. Instead, the magazine addresses issues concerning the seaand its influence on our lives in a holistic sense. The photographers use their own idiosyncratic styles to portray life on and in the seven seas. But landscape portraits and spectacular wildlife images are also included, alongside pictures of people whose lives revolve around the oceans. From day one, Nikolaus Gelpke has collected large-scaleprints of the best photo series published in the magazine. Up to now, these pictures have been presented to a larger audience as part of the travelling exhibition entitled My Favourites. Now, they grace the corridors and rooms in Altes Hafenamt.

Not to be missed
You simply cannot leave Hamburg without seeing the listed warehouses of the historical Speicherstadt. Daytime visitors can drop by the various coffeeroasters, and the famed Miniatur Wunderland is also found here. Attracting locals and tourists alike, the old redbrick buildings along the canals are brilliantly illuminated and breathtakingly beautiful in the evening.

Down by the water
The Oevelgönne Museum Harbour and the Elbe riverside beach are my favourite spots on the waterfront for an evening view of the brightly lit and bustling port. Even the New York Times recommends the Elbe riverside beach as one of Europe’s most beautiful travel destinations — an impressive accolade indeed! The best way to get there is to take the HADAG ferry. The ships are part of Hamburg’s public transport system and are perfect for a “grand tour of the port”.
