Xinyi Fox Hu

Guangdong, China, currently based in Paris

The Chinese artist Xinyi Fox Hu, in collaboration with the independent cultural association Sinokultur, ran the ceramics workshop ‘Inventing Ritual Objects’ during her residency at the studio. The artist presented the participants’ work – small sculptures made from fired clay – alongside her own sketches and experiments during the Open Studios event. In her artistic practice, Xinyi Fox Hu combines ceramics with materials such as metal, glass, mirrors and furniture. In her sculptures, the artist draws on a tradition of Cantonese culture. People set up a kind of shrine for their ancestors in their living spaces and add everyday objects to it that hold their own ritual significance. Tina Müller, founder of Sinokultur, on the artist: “We met Xinyi Fox Hu during our sinokultur trip to Geneva. The artist invited us into her studio and showed us her poetic, fairy-tale-like and organic ceramic sculptures. During her stay at the 25hours Hotel Langstrasse, she will explore Zurich and, in doing so, enter into a dialogue with the city’s magical beings.”
