Alisa Pidverbna and Andrii Nekraha

Marina Belobrovaja on Andrii Nekraha and Alisa Pidverbna from Kharkiv, Ukraine: “Since the beginning of the Russian invasion of Ukraine, the two have been traveling around Europe and earning their living with art. Their painting is influenced by personal experiences and reflects the reality of an entire generation of young people from Ukraine.”

Andrii Nekraha and Alisa Pidverbna leave the studio door open and invite interested guests and hotel visitors to join them for tea and conversation while they continue working on the paintings they have brought with them. They also create new paintings inspired by their stay at the hotel and excursions to the Kunsthaus Zürich. At the end of their residency, Andrii and Alisa invite guests to an exhibition that showcases their different approaches to painting. While Alisa Pidverbna combines hyperrealistic painted motifs such as leopards, fish, and landscapes into surreal still lifes, Andrii Nekraha displays abstract geometric color fields, which he combines with graphic motifs, text, and typography. The commonality in their art is painting as a narrative of fantasy, freedom, beauty, and cruelty.
