When the weather’s cold

The most easily accessible and comparably large ski areas are Hoch Ybrig and Flumserberg … so what are you waiting for? Equipment can be hired out on-site. If you’d prefer the hustle and bustle of the city, the Kunsthaus art gallery is well worth a visit (and there’s brunch on Sundays!).

Beyond the city limits…

Head over to Glarnerland! Not especially cool, but very relaxing. Take the Glarner Sprinter train from Zurich central station straight up into the pre-Alps. Or what about a trip to the car-free Braunwald forest, far away from the hectic big city?

Nicht verpassen!

You don’t have to scale mountains to get a great view over Zurich. Take the Polybähnli funicular train from the station “central” and be up on the ETH terrace in just a few minutes. I otherwise don’t hunt down the tourist attractions though. What I enjoy most is sitting in a pretty little square and letting the city rush past me – for example the Rathaus Café terrace on the Limmat quay on a Saturday afternoon.

Shoppen bis zum Umfallen

There are a handful of shops where I always find something I like. I just go down Josefstrasse and give the credit card a walloping.

— Street-Files Studio. Cool labels, fair prices. District 4, Badenerstrasse 156
— Lili Tulipan. Quirky, colourful, and a little kitsch. District 5, Josefstrasse 18
